SCC Cosmetology Students Hoping to Make a Difference

FAIRFIELD, CA, OCTOBER 10, 2012: Solano Community College’s Cosmetology Department is hosting a Locks of Love event and asks the community to come out and support the cause! The event will benefit the non-profit organization, Locks of Love, in providing recipients with a custom, vacuum-fitted hairpiece (does not require tape or glue) made entirely from donated human hair. The majority of Locks of Love applicants suffer from an autoimmune condition called Alopecia Aerate. There is no known cause or cure for the condition. Many other recipients have suffered severe burns or injuries, endured radiation treatment to the brain stem, or other dermatological conditions that result in permanent hair loss. The Locks of Love donation event will take place on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at the Fairfield campus, Cosmetology Department, Bldg. 1600, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Donation requirements are as follows:
• You must be willing to have your hair cut a minimum of 6 inches.
• Your hair cannot be bleached (permed/dyed hair is okay).

If you do not meet the hair donation requirements, but would like to support the cause, the SCC Cosmetology students are accepting cash donations in exchange for a haircut. Bring your family and friends out to make a difference in a child’s life!

For additional information about the event, please contact Cheryl McDonald at Cheryl.mcdonald@solano.edu or 707.864.7000, ext.4389.

About Locks of Love:

Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 who suffer from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. The organization meets a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics.

Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called Alopecia Areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses we provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers. For more information, please visit www.locksoflove.org.\

Asian-American donor matches are very difficult to make, so the bigger the turnout the more likely we are to find a match. We really need your help – you could be the one to save a life.
