              P&G hosts a science seminar designed to expose freshmen in college to opportunities for using their science degree after school.  The seminar is an all expense paid opportunity to spend 4 days immersed in a Fortune 50 company’s R&D organization.  On top of that, participants will interview and if successful, will leave with an internship or co-op for 2014.  

            The program is targeting students who are currently enrolled as 1st year Bachelors students in a Science or Engineering Technology related discipline [i.e., Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Other Life Science, Mathematics, Chemical Engineering Technology (CET), Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET), etc.].  Students can apply online at www.experiencepg.com for job#RND00002278.

What better time to learn about professional engineering licensure than during National Engineers Week 2013!  This Webinar is designed for engineering students to convey the importance, value and benefits that licensure can bring to one’s engineering career.   The presentation will describe the step-by-step process to professional licensure and cover the basics of the FE and PE examinations relevant to engineering students and graduates.  In addition to conveying the value of licensure to students at a time when they are making preliminary, but important, decisions about the direction they want their careers to take, this Webinar contains several career profiles of professionals at nationally recognized firms who undoubtedly provide targeted information about how licensure has played a role in their success. Thank you for your interest in the UC Davis Health System Department of Surgery Pre-Medical Surgical Internship & Mentorship Program. This is a unique opportunity open to all pre-medical students to be mentored by faculty, residents, interns, and medical students in the nationally recognized UC Davis Health System Department of Surgery.

This program is open to ALL pre-medical students regardless of year, academic standing, or academic institution. If you are interested in a career in medicine you are eligible to apply!

All undergraduate, graduate, and post-baccalaureate students from all institutions planning on applying to medical school are eligible. This includes community college, CSU, UC, private university, and graduating high school students who are at least 17 years old.

Setting

The site for the program is the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, CA. This 650-bed hospital is the major teaching affiliate for the UC Davis School of Medicine. The Hospital serves an area of tremendous diversity in both cultural and socioeconomic background. It is a Level 1 Trauma Center, and home to the only burn center, children’s hospital, and transplant center in Northern California. Furthermore, it is the only institution of its kind in Northern California. It is one of the five busiest Trauma Centers in the country and has been featured in multiple television programs. Their focus of service to those most in need underpins the teaching activities in this setting.

Details

This is not a volunteering or shadowing program. This is a mentorship where you will be interacting with multiple physicians in the Department of Surgery. You will be working directly with physicians every step of the way, from seeing patients in the intensive care unit, to pre-operative, post-operative, bedside, trauma bay, operating rooms, clinics, conferences, journal clubs and rounds. You will experience the duties physicians perform on a daily basis. You will be part of the team and regarded as such. This program is under the supervision and guidelines set forth by the Chairman of Surgery at the UC Davis Health System.

This is an extraordinarily unique opportunity. Maturity, attentiveness, and being able to follow directions are imperative. This is a fast-paced environment where life and death are on the line every second of the day. Professionalism and maturity are expected. The surgeons voluntarily participating in this program are enthusiastic about having pre-med interns since they were once pre-medical students. Their goal is to give you the best learning experience possible. So please be respectful of them at all times. Additionally, we ask that you remain flexible and follow their instructions.

Here is a research opportunity solely for community college students.  Deadline is March 1, 2013.

INSET has been running for 11 years, and it is one of the few research internship programs exclusively open to community college students. Briefly, the program is an 8-week full-time research experience, where students are paired with UCSB faculty and graduate student mentors (one on one), to work on real, cutting edge research problems. Interns are paid $3,500 and receive either campus lodging or a $900 housing stipend.

          The Center to Eliminate Cancer Health Disparities at Charles Drew University (CDU) and the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center at UCLA (UCLA) are hosting a great summer internship opportunity for undergraduate students and the deadline, February 1, is coming up. Please let students know about this opportunity.         

         The Undergraduate Cancer Research Training Program (UCRTP) is a summer internship to train undergraduates in technical and critical thinking skills in a laboratory, clinical, or community setting. The goal of the UCRTP is to ensure that each undergraduate student acquires the knowledge, skills, and attitude to become a proficient researcher in cancer research. Research topics include but are not limited to molecular, cell, developmental biology and genetics of cancer; the influence of lifestyle choices, diet, and exercise on cancer risk; and translating basic research into cancer therapeutic agents. Each student intern acquires training by working on a hypothesis-driven scientific research project, at CDU or UCLA, alongside a designated mentor during the course of 8-12 weeks. A stipend is provided to students in the program. The internship is competitive, and applications are due on February 1, 2013.         This is a great opportunity for students to gain research experience so please feel free to forward this information. Greetings!
 
This is an alert regarding the QEM/NSF Science Policy-focused Summer Internship Program. Attached you will find an application packet we would like you to share with your graduate and undergraduate students from groups underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), particularly those interested in pursuing careers in science policy or science education. Also, you will find attached a flyer describing this summer internship opportunity. We ask that you download and post the flyer on your departmental bulletin board to further ensure that students are aware of these opportunities.
 
The ten-week, Washington, DC-based internship (May 28 –August 2, 2013) is made possible through a grant to the Quality Education for Minorities (QEM) Network from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Students who successfully complete the internship will receive a taxable stipend, $3,000 for undergraduates and $4,000 for graduate students, paid in three installments over the course of the summer. The students also will receive housing at George Washington University with other QEM interns as well as round-trip airfare and ground travel reimbursement.
 
During the internship, students will have an opportunity to: (1) increase their understanding of how science policy is made; (2) further develop their potential for becoming leaders and proponents of increased participation in science and engineering by students from underrepresented minority groups; (3) become knowledgeable about potential/actual barriers preventing minority students from receiving a high quality mathematics/science education; and (4) become familiar with policies, programs, and strategies being implemented to address such issues. The students also will strengthen their research, communications, and other professional skills, and develop a peer network that includes QEM summer interns from across the country.
 
Students who wish to participate in the internship must currently be a STEM major at an accredited institution and have successfully completed at least the sophomore year before the start of the internship program. They also must be returning to a degree-granting institution the following academic year, either at the undergraduate or graduate level. Graduating seniors must be already admitted to and planning to enter graduate school in Fall 2013 to be eligible.
