ACCJC Reaffirms Solano Community College’s Accreditation

FAIRFIELD, CA, FEBRUARY 7, 2014: Solano Community College (SCC) has received the letter it was waiting for from the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC). SCC has been cleared of all sanctions and has received ACCJC’s recommendation for accreditation reaffirmation.
“While the College never lost its accreditation status, ACCJC issued warnings over the years for us to make improvements,” said Pam Keith, SCC Governing Board President. “Receiving notification that all sanctions have been completely lifted is exhilarating news,” she added.
Dr. Jowel Laguerre, SCC Superintendent-President shared, “We are ecstatic to receive the wonderful news regarding our accreditation status! I want to thank the Governing Board, students, faculty, and staff for their patience, hard-work and diligence to restore Solano Community College’s reputation. Furthermore, we want to reassure the community that although our status was never removed, we are better than we were two years ago and will strive to continually improve Solano County and Winters local community college.”
The College will host a press conference on Monday, February 10, 2014 at the Fairfield Campus, Theater Building. The conference is scheduled to begin at 9:00am. The ACCJC letter will be read and questions will be answered during this time. All are welcome to attend!
About Solano Community College:
The College has served as the preeminent educational institution in Solano County since 1945 when it was founded as Vallejo Junior College. In the early 1970s, the College moved to its present Fairfield site, and is currently serving over 20,000 students throughout the academic year.
In addition to the main campus in Fairfield, the College has one Center in Vacaville, and one in Vallejo. To further serve the community, SCC offers courses at Travis Air Force Base, and operates a School of Aeronautics at the Nut Tree Airport.

SCC Hosts 13th Annual MLK Community Event: “Ordinary People Who Did Extraordinary Things”

FAIRFIELD, CA, JANUARY 13, 2014: Solano Community College’s (SCC) 13th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Multicultural Celebration will be held on Sunday, January 19, 2014, at 3:00 p.m., at the SCC Fairfield Campus Theater. The event will include a phenomenal program featuring interviews of civil rights veterans, Ms. Sherie Labedis and Mr. Charles McLaurin, conducted by middle school students Marcus Fleming and Mekhi Little. The community is encouraged to attend this free, family-friendly event.
In addition to the interviews, Mr. Jim Bracy (retired SCC Vice President, Student Services); Dr. Sarah Chapman, SCC Trustee; and Mr. C.C. Yin, McDonald’s Owner will be recognized for their lifetime service and achievements. The program will include musical performances, well-deserving accolades, and historical information in a light-hearted environment.

Solano Community College District Governing Board Officers Elected

Fairfield, CA, december 18, 2013: Solano Community College (SCC) District Governing Board Officers for the 2013-2014 year were elected at tonight’s Board meeting. Trustee Pam Keith was elected President and Trustee A. Marie Young was elected Vice President.  Dr. Jowel Laguerre was elected to serve as Secretary. Trustee Sarah Chapman will serve as the representative to the Solano County School Board Association.  The new appointments began following the vote and subsequent approval.

Pam Keith, SCC Board President commented, “I want to thank my colleagues for allowing me the honor to serve as Board President for the upcoming 2014 year. I look forward to this exciting time of conducting business collaboratively on behalf of the Solano Community College District!”

In addition, the following dates have been approved as the 2014 Governing Board meeting schedule:

  • 1/15, 2/5, 2/19*, 3/5, 3/19**, 4/2, 5/7, 5/21, 6/4, 6/18, 7/16, 8/6, 8/20, 9/3, 9/17, 10/1, 10/15*, 11/5, 11/19**, 12/3, 12/17.
    • One asterisk (*) denotes meeting to be held at Vallejo Center, 545 Columbus Parkway, Vallejo.
    • Two asterisks (**) denotes meeting to be held at Vacaville Center, 2001 North Village Parkway, Vacaville.

All Board meetings (unless otherwise noted) will be held in the Board Room (First Floor-West Lobby) of the Administration Building, located at 360 Campus Lane, Suite 201, Fairfield.  All meetings, with the exception of Closed Sessions, are open to the public.

SCC Board to Appoint Governing Board Positions for 2013-2014

Fairfield, CA, December 4, 2013:  Solano Community College (SCC) Governing Board approved the motion for the Wednesday, December 18, 2013, Board meeting to be designated as the annual organizational meeting of the Governing Board. The organizational meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m., in the Solano Community College Administration Building located at 360 Campus Lane, Ste. 201 (First floor, West Lobby), Fairfield.

The annual organizational meeting will be held to conduct the following business:

  • Elect a President, Vice President, and appoint a Secretary for 2013-2014;
  • Establish the dates, times, and locations of the future Governing Board meetings;
    • Tentative Board Meeting dates: 1/15, 2/5, 2/19, 3/5, 3/19, 4/2, 5/7, 5/21, 6/4, 6/18, 7/16, 8/6, 8/20, 9/3, 9/17, 10/1, 10/15, 11/5, 11/19, 12/3, 12/17.
  • Select a representative to the Solano County School Boards Association.
