SCC Students Teach Foreign Languages to K-12

FAIRFIELD, CA, OCTOBER 15, 2013:
Solano Community College’s (SCC) Foreign Language students are pleased to be teaching elementary aged children this Fall semester in the Fairfield Suisun Unified School District (FSUSD). The College is offering a special course called Cross Age Teaching, which affords students the opportunity to gain real-world teaching experience in basic French, German, and Spanish. The SCC students work in groups of two and teach 30 minute lessons for 17 weeks. This semester, the SCC students are teaching at K. I. Jones in the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Program, Suisun Valley K-8, and B. Gale Wilson K-8 schools. SCC Foreign Languages Department has been collaborating with FSUSD schools since 2001; College’s students are now teaching in 13 classrooms and exposing over 300 young students to the joys of learning a foreign language.
“The lessons focus on simple, but important, vocabulary like the numbers, days of the week, months, and objects in the classroom. We are required to implement singing and games in every lesson,” shared Lorna Marlow-Munoz, SCC Foreign Language faculty. “The Cross Age Teaching Program gives our students a chance to give back to the community and strengthen their own language skills. This semester, we have a recipient of the program from 10 years ago now teaching in her former elementary school classroom!”
For more information about SCC’s Cross Age Teaching Program, please contact Lorna Marlow-Munoz at 707.864.7291 or lorna.marlow-munoz@solano.edu.

ASSC Hosts Bone Marrow Donor Drive

The Associated Students of Solano College will be holding the third semesterly bone marrow donor drive in conjunction with the Asian American Donor Program. The drive will be held on October 9th and 10th from 10am to 3pm at the 1400 building on the main Fairfield campus.

The ASSC was first approached in Fall 2012 by AADP Outreach Coordinator Thi Ly to find bone marrow donors for former Solano Community College student Kyle Lu, and has been determined to make the drive a tradition. To date, the ASSC AADP drive has signed up over 200 students as donors, and found two potential matches.

Registering as a donor is very easy and only takes a few minutes. Those interested in donating should be between 18 and 44 years of age, have appropriate ID, and be of general good health. Potential donors must fill out a short form and get their cheek swabbed.

Suisun Valley Review taking submissions for publication

It’s that time of year again! You know, where you submit to your favorite literary magazine: Suisun Valley Review!

Much like bears, squirrels, other woodland beasts, and tortoises, SVR’s editor committee takes a break about accepting and reviewing submissions until the spring. But with the arrival of Solano Community College’s spring semester, so comes the arrival of this year’s batch of editors! We’re all super jazzed to get to work on reviewing submissions, and are very likely to jump right into that in the following weeks. Until then, submit!

Submissions are open to anyone, SCC student or not!, until March 31st, 2013! For more information, please visit http://suisunvalleyreview.blogspot.com/
