Having problems in English 1, 2, or 4? Then scream Hallelujah!

The English department and ASC have collaborated to pilot a drop-in lab, which will open with limited hours Monday, March 4th. The lab will be in room 135 (behind the English/Reading Lab in room 130) and will be open MWF 11-2.

The lab will be a resource to help students work on essays for any course at SCC, not just English courses.   Students will be able to sign up for drop in sessions up to two weeks in advance for a 20-minute appointment, but they will only be able to meet with a drop-in instructor six times over the semester, and only two times on any given assignment.  The lab will be a place to help the student develop the skills needed to improve their abilities in reading and writing.  This means we will introduce them to strategies associated with active reading, brainstorming, organizing, revising and proofreading, but we will not do the work for them.   The goal of the lab is to meet an as-yet unmet need on this campus—to provide a place where students can drop in for help and guidance as they develop their papers.

We have currently submitted a strategic proposal to offer the lab during regular hours next year, but opening the lab this semester will give us a chance to help some students now while we collect data.  If you have any students who you believe would benefit from support in the drop-in lab, please send them to room 135 to sign up for an appointment.  Also, if you could fill out a referral form (Instructor Referral form), we would be able to work with the student even more effectively.  Please also announce this resource to your students.

The English department would like to thank the ASC for supporting and funding this lab pilot.  We have been working towards this goal for several years, and we are very pleased to finally offer this additional support to the campus community.
