SCC Hosts Solano County High School Math Steeplechase Competition

FAIRFIELD, CA, SEPTEMBER 27, 2012: Solano Community College (SCC) proudly hosts this year’s Solano County Math Steeplechase, a county-wide math competition for high school students presented by The Math Educators of Solano County. SCC is a new location for the Steeplechase; and hopes are that having the competition at the local community college will increase awareness of higher education opportunities available to the high school participants. The competition will take place on Thursday, October 11, 2012, from 9:30am to 12:30pm with the stations organized throughout the campus: near the gymnasium, in front of the 1500 building, by the clock tower, at the flag pole, and more.
Currently, Dixon High, Vacaville High, and Fairfield High Schools are confirmed to participate and we look forward to more high schools throughout the county joining the competition. The purpose of this activity is to promote problem solving and an enjoyment of math. Teams of four students compete in a problem solving course of twelve stations, solving challenging and fun problems in a collaborative effort.
Professor Genele Rhoads, SCC Math Instructor, comments, “Last year, 100 students from 10 high schools attended the event held at Andrew’s Park in Vacaville. Teams of students tackled 13 different problem solving activities at stations located around the park. Participation prizes were awarded and the top three teams in both junior varsity and varsity divisions earned trophies to display at their local high school. The students and teachers involved in this event comment year after year how enjoyable the day is!”
