Community College Pathway to Law School, SCC Hopes to be One of Twenty

Fairfield, CA, December 4, 2013:  Solano Community College (SCC) Governing Board approved with full support the College’s request to submit a letter of interest to the State Bar of California to be considered one of 20 community colleges to participate in an innovative diversity outreach initiative: Community College Pathway to Law School.  Participation in this initiative will provide eligible SCC students interested in law with an opportunity to be granted guaranteed admission or given priority enrollment to a minimum of four top accredited law schools in California.

The Community College Pathway to Law School program would provide a clear pathway from community college to law school.  Support for the students, including mentoring and pre-law counseling, will be included in order to provide students with the best possible chance for success.  The initiative requires the completion of courses that are based on a defined set of success factors that help make effective lawyers.

“Participation in this initiative is a phenomenal opportunity for the College.  Our students interested in law will be afforded a chance to receive high priority into top law schools in California — we are essentially embarking on a Transfer Agreement Guarantee (TAG) with law schools,” commented Dr. Jowel Laguerre, SCC Superintendent-President.

Presently, the State of California is a majority-minority state with approximately 60 percent of its population made up of persons from racial-ethnic minority groups, however, the California State Bar is made up of approximately 20 percent racial-ethnic minority lawyers.  Diversity in the legal and judicial system is a priority for public trust and confidence.

SCC Students Teach Foreign Languages to K-12

FAIRFIELD, CA, OCTOBER 15, 2013:
Solano Community College’s (SCC) Foreign Language students are pleased to be teaching elementary aged children this Fall semester in the Fairfield Suisun Unified School District (FSUSD). The College is offering a special course called Cross Age Teaching, which affords students the opportunity to gain real-world teaching experience in basic French, German, and Spanish. The SCC students work in groups of two and teach 30 minute lessons for 17 weeks. This semester, the SCC students are teaching at K. I. Jones in the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Program, Suisun Valley K-8, and B. Gale Wilson K-8 schools. SCC Foreign Languages Department has been collaborating with FSUSD schools since 2001; College’s students are now teaching in 13 classrooms and exposing over 300 young students to the joys of learning a foreign language.
“The lessons focus on simple, but important, vocabulary like the numbers, days of the week, months, and objects in the classroom. We are required to implement singing and games in every lesson,” shared Lorna Marlow-Munoz, SCC Foreign Language faculty. “The Cross Age Teaching Program gives our students a chance to give back to the community and strengthen their own language skills. This semester, we have a recipient of the program from 10 years ago now teaching in her former elementary school classroom!”
For more information about SCC’s Cross Age Teaching Program, please contact Lorna Marlow-Munoz at 707.864.7291 or lorna.marlow-munoz@solano.edu.
