Solano College Tennis sends six to state

For a Solano College tennis team in its infancy, the young group of nine has cultivated a rare form of unity.

In just it’s second year overall and inaugural year offering a women’s program, the fledgling group of Falcons defied the odds and will be sending six players to the state tournament in Ojai April 26-30.

Following successful showings at the conference tournament at American River College the first weekend of April, Chris Hagler, J.D. Bobo, Ashley Contawe, Sierra Shackelford, Reis Vince-Cruz and Krystov Fout earned their spot in the state tournament.

But while the expeditious maturation of the program allowed each team to place third in the Big 8 North Conference, the tennis team’s biggest challenge came before they set foot on Chris Cammisa Court.

“When we lost Victoria (Alvarez), who was a key piece to our puzzle in every way, we had to re-shift doubles teams,” said Solano head coach Jordan Walker. “But when we put Ashley and Sierra together, they started the conference schedule playing together and were at least the second best team in the conference. They raised their level of play pretty high.”

Donning a commemorative T-shirt in tribute to his team’s fallen Falcon, who died in a tragic drowning incident President’s Day weekend, Walker admitted that conversations were had in regard to whether or not their season should continue.

“It was brutal,” Walker said. “It was the hardest thing I’ve gone through as a coach. And for these young people who were already a really tight team, there was talk of (canceling the season). But we felt that if we asked her what she wanted that she would have definitely said to ‘play ball.’”

Solano was forced to reschedule a match at the outset of the season but managed to battle through, en route to a 7-5 record for the men and a 6-6 season for the women.

Solano freshman and Falcons’ No. 1 women’s singles player Camille Contawe was an integral source for the Falcons’ success and credited coach Walker for the warrior’s mentality he’d passed down to his team. And in her eyes, his patience and engaging demeanor was an important factor in the success of this year’s young group.

“To me personally, Jordan has so much patience,” she said. “There’s a lot of things I’ve learned from Jordan. He’s taught us how to be battlers and to go out there and play as hard as you can. But really, he’s not just a coach either. He’s been there for us like a second dad, or a friend.”

Alongside doubles teammate J.D. Bobo and fellow Falcons’ doubles team Vince-Cruz and Fout, Hagler is the lone Solano singles player slated to compete in Ojai.

The California Lutheran University transfer and Walnut Creek resident, who has taken on quite the commute throughout the season, has provided an unparalleled boost to his team and lost just one match all year.

But while he had his sites set on the trip to Ojai at the genesis of this season, Hagler couldn’t be more proud of his team as they look for the grandiose conclusion not typically fit for young group of their ilk.

“I’m really proud of them,” Hagler said. “The season started off really well and everyone was really close. And then all of a sudden something you can’t control happened and it brought us a lot closer; even though we were already close. We took some time to reflect on what happened and we came back and now we have even more motivation to win.”

SCC Head Baseball Coach Scott Stover Records 300th Win

Fairfield, CA: Solano Community College (SCC) is proud to announce that Head Baseball Coach, Scott Stover, recorded his 300th win vs Yuba College. This is Coach Stover’s 14th season as the Falcon’s Head Coach. Coach Stover has led the Falcons to six conference titles in the past nine seasons. He has also guided the Falcons to eight playoff appearances in the past ten years, and only had one losing season during that span. Coming in to the 2016 season, the Falcons have won 249 games over the past ten years, making Solano average just below 25 wins a season in the past decade. This puts them in the top eight programs in Northern California during that span. The 6 conference titles is second in Northern California in the past decade. The Falcons have also won 187 games in conference play over the past ten seasons (entering 2016), which ranks them number one in the Bay Valley Conference. They have only lost 10 conference series since 2006, Coach Stover’s 300 wins at Solano ranks him second in school history, behind Stan McWilliams who coached from 1956-1986. The Falcons have broken a number of school records during Coach Stover tenure, including wins (32), conference wins (24) and team batting average (.339).

The 300 wins were hard fought. The Falcons have always played a very competitive schedule. Solano has been ranked in the top 3 in the RPI in strength of schedule, for the past 5 years.  During coach Stover’s tenure the Falcons have 82 wins vs ranked and playoff opponents. In addition, they have beaten 12 victories versus conference champions. These type of accomplishments earned Solano playoff hosting rights 7 times, including the 2011 Super Regional Host site, where they were the #1 seed. The BVC has been ranked in the top 3 the past 8 years, and in 2 of the last 3 years either had more teams with a winning record, than their neighboring conference, and/or more teams ranked in the top 20 of the RPI.

Coach Stover and his staff take pride that over 90% of their student-athletes have gone on to a four-year school.  In fact over 55 student-athletes from Coach Stover’s first 11 seasons have completed their undergraduate work and have obtained a B.A. or B.S.  In addition, he has coached 3 conference players of the year and 4 conference pitchers of the year, as well as over 30 total All-American and All-State student-athletes. He has also been awarded the Conference coach of the year honor four times by his peers.

Coach Stover played in the Bay Valley Conference as well. While at Cosumnes River he earned All-BVC Honors in both his freshman and sophomore year, while also earning All-BVC Academic Honors his sophomore season. This is Coach Stover’s 14 year at Solano, but his 16th season as a high level baseball coach in Solano County. Coach Stover began his career with the Solano Steelheads Professional Baseball Club, in Vacaville. He was the 3rd base and hitting coach in 2000, and in 2002 he was the Manager. His 43 wins as a professional manager and 300 wins as our college coach, makes him one of the most successful coaches to ever coach in this county.

Prior to the April 29 final regular season home game vs Mendocino College, we will recognize Coach Stover for his great accomplishments and present him with a plaque.
